Data and network cabling in Mildenhall and Suffolk
Wi-Fi gets the attention, but the cables behind it decide how well a network performs. Solarsat installs data and network cabling for homes and businesses around Mildenhall, from a few wired sockets for a home office to structured cabling and a data cabinet for a whole building.

Why wired connections still matter
A cable is not affected by thick walls, neighbouring networks or the number of people online. For a desktop computer, a smart TV that streams in high quality, a games console or a server, a wired socket gives consistent speed and low delay that wireless struggles to match.
Wired connections are also easier to secure and troubleshoot. A device on a cable is where you expect it to be, and a faulty port or lead can be found and swapped quickly.
Cabling also makes Wi-Fi better. Access points connected back to the network by cable perform far more reliably than ones relaying signal to each other wirelessly, so a properly cabled building is the foundation of good coverage in every room.
What structured cabling involves
Wired network sockets
Wall or floor sockets where computers, TVs, printers and phones need them, each with its own run back to a central point.
Data cabinet
A secure cabinet that houses the switches, router, patch panel and other equipment, keeping it tidy, ventilated and easy to work on.
Patch panel
Every cable ends at a numbered port, so connections can be moved or changed with a short lead rather than new wiring.
Access point and camera feeds
Cables to ceilings and outside walls for Wi-Fi access points and IP cameras, often carrying power on the same cable.
Testing
Every run is tested once it is terminated, so faults are caught before the walls are closed or the furniture goes back.
Offices and commercial premises
In an office, cabling needs to suit how desks are laid out today while leaving room for change. Grouping sockets by desk position, adding spare outlets in meeting rooms and planning routes through ceilings or floor voids all make future moves easier.
Shops, workshops and industrial units bring their own needs: card machines and tills that must not drop out, cameras around the building, and equipment in back rooms or mezzanines. Bringing all of it back to one data cabinet keeps the network manageable as the business grows.
Choosing the cable is part of the plan. Higher-specification cable leaves headroom for faster equipment in future, and runs are kept within sensible lengths and away from mains cables where possible to avoid interference.
Untangling an existing installation
Many buildings have cabling added a bit at a time, by different people, with nothing written down. The result is often a tangle of unlabelled leads, switches tucked behind desks and nobody quite sure which socket goes where.
Tidying that up usually starts with tracing and labelling what is already there, removing redundant equipment and bringing the useful cables into a cabinet with a patch panel. A simple record of which socket connects to which port makes the next change, and the next fault, far quicker to deal with. We can also take over and upgrade an existing network rather than starting again.
Old switches and routers are often the hidden bottleneck, so a review of the equipment can be as useful as the cables themselves.
New builds and extensions
The easiest time to install data cabling is before the plaster goes on. In a new build, renovation or extension, cables can be run through stud walls and ceiling voids with no chasing and no visible trunking, and it costs far less effort than adding them later.
It is worth thinking beyond the obvious. A socket behind every TV position, cables to likely access point locations on each floor, feeds to outside walls for cameras and a sensible spot for the cabinet, often an understairs cupboard or utility room, all repay the planning. Share your drawings with us early and we can mark the positions before first fix.
At home, popular positions include the lounge TV wall, a home office, bedrooms used for gaming and the landing or hallway ceiling for an access point.
