Freesat installation in Mildenhall and Suffolk

Freesat brings satellite TV channels to your home with no monthly subscription. All it needs is a dish, the right cabling and a compatible box or TV. Solarsat fits the dish, runs the feeds and connects everything up for households around Mildenhall, including homes where an aerial alone struggles.

Phones and email Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 6pm. Showroom visits by appointment.

What Freesat is

Freesat is free-to-air satellite television. The channels are broadcast from satellites and picked up by a dish on your home, then decoded by a Freesat box or a television with a Freesat tuner built in. Once the equipment is in place there is nothing further to pay to watch.

Recorders let you pause and record programmes, and some televisions have Freesat built in, which saves a separate box in rooms where you only need live TV.

It is a popular choice in rural parts of Suffolk and Norfolk where terrestrial reception is weak, for people leaving a paid satellite service who want to keep a dish-based setup, and as an alternative to relying on broadband for live TV.

What a Freesat installation involves

  • Survey

Checking where a dish can see the right part of the sky, how cables will reach each TV and whether an existing dish can be reused.

  • Dish and LNB

Fitting the dish on a secure bracket with an LNB suited to the number of tuners and rooms you want to serve.

  • Alignment

Pointing the dish accurately and confirming signal quality, not just whether a picture appears.

  • Connection and tuning

Running the feeds indoors, connecting your box or TV and checking every channel group comes through.

Choosing where the dish goes

The dish needs an unobstructed view towards the satellites, which sit low in the southern sky from here. Before anything is fixed, we check for trees, neighbouring roofs and parts of your own house that could block that path, now and as hedges and trees grow.

Within those limits there is usually some choice. A side wall can keep the dish off the front of the house, a lower position is easier to reach later, and a short cable run gives a stronger signal. Older chimneys and soft brickwork are checked before anything is mounted on them.

If you are switching from another satellite service, the existing dish may already point at the right satellites. In that case the work may be a check, a new LNB or fresh connectors rather than a complete new installation.

Several rooms and your TV aerial

Each Freesat tuner needs its own feed from the dish. A TV in the lounge, one in the kitchen and a recorder that records one channel while you watch another all count, so the LNB and cabling are planned around how many you need now and in future.

Most homes also want the terrestrial channels from a TV aerial. Combining the two means each room can have one neat wall plate carrying both satellite and aerial signals, with the separation done behind the TV. If your home already has an aerial system, we can often bring Freesat into the same cabling rather than running everything twice.

For larger homes, flats or annexes, a multi-point system distributes the signal from one dish to many outlets, so each home or room has its own feed without a cluster of dishes on the wall.

Fixing Freesat faults

Channels missing after a retune, a no-signal message on one TV only, or pictures that break up in wet weather all point to different causes. A single room losing signal is often a cable, connector or wall plate problem, while every TV failing together points towards the dish, the LNB or the alignment.

We test the system in stages, from the box back to the dish, so the actual fault is found and fixed. If the dish turns out to be in a poor position, we can move it somewhere with a better view.

Weather is a frequent trigger. Water creeping into an outdoor connector, a bracket loosened by strong winds or ice on the dish can all cause problems that come and go, which is why intermittent faults are worth tracing properly rather than retuning again and again.
