Where video walls earn their place

  • Shops and retail

Window and in-store displays that draw attention to products, offers and brand content.

  • Showrooms

Large, detailed images of products or projects that bring a showroom space to life.

  • Offices and receptions

Welcome messages, company information and live dashboards in a reception or operations area.

  • Venues and events

Big-picture backdrops for presentations, functions and live feeds that everyone in the room can see.

  • Restaurants and bars

Sport, menus and promotions on a large display that customers can see from anywhere in the room.

Planning the layout

Start with what the wall will show and where people will be when they see it. A wall viewed from across a shop floor needs different sizing from one in a reception seen from a sofa a few metres away. The arrangement can be a classic grid such as two by two or three by three, a wide strip, or something more creative to suit the space.

Displays designed for video walls have very thin edges, so the joins between screens are narrow. Even so, it is worth designing content with the grid in mind, keeping text and faces away from the seams. We also check the wall itself, its strength and its flatness, and the viewing angles from the main approaches.

Brightness should suit the location. A wall facing a sunny shop window needs far more brightness than one in a dim lounge bar, and some displays are built for long daily running hours. If the wall will show live TV or sport, the aerial, satellite or streaming source needs planning in from the start.

Content sources and control

A video wall needs something to show. That might be a media player looping promotional content, a computer running a dashboard, a live TV or camera feed, or a laptop for presentations. A processor or controller splits the image across the screens or shows different sources on different parts of the wall.

Day-to-day control should be simple. Staff may need to switch between preset layouts, change the source for an event or turn the wall on and off with opening hours. We set this up through a remote, a wall panel or scheduling, depending on how the space is run.

Content management is often the part that gets forgotten. Decide who will update what is shown, how often and from where. A network-connected player lets someone change the content from an office rather than plugging in a memory stick.

Mounting and alignment

Video wall mounts are designed to hold each screen in precise alignment with its neighbours, with adjustment so every edge lines up. Many allow individual screens to pop out for servicing without dismantling the whole wall.

The combined weight of several large displays is significant, so the fixing method is matched to the wall construction. Once the screens are hung, we fine-tune their position and match brightness and colour across the panels so the wall reads as one image rather than a patchwork.

Floor-standing frames are an option where the wall cannot take the weight, or where the display needs to stand free in the middle of a showroom.

Cabling, power and ventilation

Each screen needs power and a signal, and the processor, players and network equipment need a home. We plan cable routes behind the wall or through a nearby void and put the equipment in a cupboard or rack where it can be reached easily but stays out of view.

Displays running for long hours produce heat, so recessed installations need airflow behind them. Planning ventilation, power and a network connection for remote content updates at the start keeps the wall reliable once it is in daily use.

Access matters for the long term. A wall that can be serviced from the front without removing every screen saves a great deal of effort when a single panel needs attention.
